My absolutely favorite thing I ever remember Oprah saying is that on a regular basis she asks God to help her “shine with her brightest light possible.” It is her mission in life. Ever since I heard her say that, she has inspired my mission to do the same.
Oprah is not the only one who has called upon us to recognize our inner light. Katy Perry sings about it in her song Firework. I am also sure that most of us have heard the song This Little Light of Mine. The Bellamy Brothers also invite us to let our light shine in the song Let Your Love Flow. Even the word en-lighten, which suggests to be filled with light, is used to describe someone with a greater spiritual connection and wisdom. What is this light they are referencing?
Inside each of us is the most beautiful light you could ever imagine. It is the loving force of the universe. It is healing and transformative. It is the light of God. When we allow ourselves to connect to it, we flow with life. Love, joy and inner peace permeate our every pore. We cannot help but radiate it out to everyone we meet. Just by being near others, we are able to lift them up to a higher place within themselves. Whether or not we realize it, the energy we carry impacts those around us. By choosing to shine with our brightest light possible, we are choosing to stay connected to that Source of light as often as we possibly can.
The idea that we are made up of light entered my life back in the Fall of 2009. I was reading a book called Spiritual Growth by Sanaya Roman in which she has dedicated an entire chapter to explaining the light within. While reading it, I remember feeling increasingly calm and peaceful. It resonated with my heart. In the book she invites you to connect with light by calling light to yourself. Just the thought of light, brings light. Intuitively, our souls know what light is, even if our minds don’t completely understand it as of yet. Our imagination is our greatest gift for connecting with what our mind does not completely understand.
Our imagination is our greatest gift for connecting with what our mind does not completely understand.
In my minds eye, I imagined a waterfall of warm glowing light flowing from the top of my body down through my toes. I sat the book down and imagined my body filling up with as much light as I could possibly contain. What happened next was a transformative experience that will forever change the person I am. My entire body began to tingle and I felt waves of energy moving up and down my body. I was in awe. I was engulfed in absolute peace. Everything in the world felt okay and my body wanted to rest like it never had before. I drifted off to sleep.
When I awoke I was in my bedroom looking around the room. My vision was clear and I felt amazing. I couldn’t help but notice the little white etheric-like clouds hanging around the corners of my room. It was in that moment that I looked to my left to see myself sleeping in the bed! As I had heard about these experiences before, I instantly knew that I was having what is called an Outer Body Experience (OBE)…and I was beyond ecstatic. I lifted up my left hand to look at it and it was filled with what seemed to be a network of light. I recall being able to look through it! In amazement, I wanted to see what I was capable of. I thought to myself that I wanted to go see Aubrey, my husband, at work. Instantly, I was pulled back to myself like a retracting rubber band. I opened my eyes and was looking up at my ceiling. Vibrations filled my body, while a huge smile filled my face. I knew what had just happened. Since that day, I have had a dozen more similar experiences of a similar nature.
As crazy as it sounds, I know I was given a gift that day to understand that we are more than our physical bodies. I realize not all of you will understand or believe what I say and that is okay. I am not sure I would have believed it had I not experienced it first hand. It is just important to me that I share with you what I know. What I know is that we are beings of beautiful light and we are more than our physical bodies. We are little sparks of God that have come here to make the world a more beautiful place for each other. It is our choice what we choose to do with that, but my hope for the world is that we all do our best to shine on 😀
It is better to light candles
than to curse the darkness.
It is better to plant seeds
than to accuse the earth.
The world needs all of our power
and love and energy,
and each of us has something that we can give.
The trick is to find it and use it,
to find it and give it away.
So there will always be more.
We can be lights for each other,
and through each other’s illumination
we will see the way.
Each of us is a seed,
a silent promise,
and it is always spring.—Merle Shain
